OPUS DEI RETREAT CENTER & ARCHIVES
THE ORATORY
2004

The parti of this special project takes the form of a river crossing in the upper midwest. The facility is designed to house a private retreat center and Oratory for the members of OpusDei, a personal prelature of the Catholic Church under the direct authority of the holy father. This center of the work would archive important records of Opus Dei’s world wide activities along with information and scholarly research regarding the founder, Saint Josemarie Escriva.

This very modern, all glass and steel composition is comprised of the large volume on the west bank which contains the oratory and sacristies along with the archives, the bridge element which contains the hotel for retreatants and the smaller voulme on the east bank which houses the refectory and common rooms for use during retreats and research.

Set within a reflecting pool the oratory’s tower is the visual and actual anchor of the composition which spans the river to the eastern wing.
